Hair Apparent: Melanie McDowell of Cariloe Concept Salon
“The thing I like most about doing hair is when I can make someone’s day just by making their hair look beautiful,” says Melanie McDowell, Color Specialist and Designer at Cariloe Concept Salon. “If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then the hair is the window dressing!”
McDowell offered me a complimentary cut and color to review her work and the salon, and the first thing one notices about the hair designer is her warmth. While Cariloe is definitely contemporary, cool and even artsy, the ambiance of the salon is welcoming and approachable. There’s no exclusivity or snobbery present. McDowell further displays this vibe through her friendly personality and eagerness to listen to her clients’ wishes and make them come true.
The mother of three, including a college student and a two-year-old, McDowell’s hair expertise dates back to over two decades. Her skill shows and she is quite the perfectionist. “I know color like the back of my hand so corrective color is a breeze,” she elaborates, “When I finish my looks I like to cut the hair wet, blow dry, then cut some more for the perfect finish.” In addition to cutting, coloring and styling, McDowell also offers the Keratin straightening treatment for those who battle with frizz and hair streamers for clients who wish to sparkle for a night on the town.
Other aspects that McDowell seems to enjoy about her job is the interaction with people and her ability to help them relax. “I’ve always been interested in natural ways to help my clients’ health and well-being, so I got certified as an aroma therapist and became a Reike Master to relax them while getting beautiful,” she explains. My own visit included a scalp massage during the shampoo process, through which I practically fell asleep. ”I have clients from all walks of life which is so wonderful because it makes everyday different. One day I’ve got a grandma with a hairpiece sitting in my chair and the next it’s a 20-something guy wanting a purple, blue, and green Mohawk,” McDowell says.
To book an appointment with McDowell call her at 702-868-2887 (main) or 702-327-2303 (direct), or email her at divacolor@aol.com. Read her blog at Vegashair.blogspot.com and follow her on Twitter at Twitter.com/vegashair. Visit Cariloe’s website at www.cariloe.com.
